I purchased a 650 maxim last November, not totally familiar with the bike.
After a long winter nap I started the bike, it started fine.
I barely used the choke and it started fine, maybe about 1/4" pull on the choke lever and it started , any further on the choke lever and it kills the engine. After a few minutes it runs fine, no issue.
    Is this normal?
My other bike is a Honda 750 I need the choke fully engaged for it to start when it is cold and to be on for the next 2-3 minutes before it warms up.

They vary. Mine needs full choke for a bit when <40F Other wise when cool out about 1/2. When warm out none.

Just need to learn what your bike needs. Once started they are a bit sensitive t adding more choke. You may find it will start fine with full choke and then you can back it off where if you start with no choke and apply some it dies.
