I'm looking to buy a 1983 maxim 650, are there any specific problems I should look for before buying? Stuff that's known to go wrong on these bikes (eg. starter clutch issues on Viragos)?

Make sure it starts (from cold), idles Ok, doesn't smoke too much and you can select all gears - shaft XJs apparently have some primary drive tensioner that breaks up and jams the gear box.. All standard stuff to be honest.

The starter clutch and the alternator chain guide are the ony weak points. Both require a case split to remedy, but once done both will be good for another 20 to 30 years. A slipping starter clutch is not necessaraly indicative of the clutch failing though.
