Hi All. I am new to motorcycles and to these forums. I recently acquired a 1981 Yamaha XJ750 (pics to come). I love the look of the bike and the power it has is wonderful however I have one small problem that is occurring. When I first start the bike It doesn't want to stay running. Even when I turn the choke up, the engine idle speed barely increases and if I give it a little gas the engine just dies. If I can get it it moving though, the bike runs flawlessly until I have to stop again. The bike wont stop stalling at stop until it has been ridden for about five to ten minutes. Any ideas on what might be causing this and what i could do to fix it? Thanks in advance!

float levels could be set wrong. Your carbs pilot jets can be dirty or misadjusted. Your enrichment circuit (choke) could be dirty. Your petcock could be starving it of fuel at idle.

Once you clean the carbs the floats need to be adjusted.
Then idle mixture adjusted then sync
