I can't just cut my own gasket from material and expect it to work can I ?

It looks as though it's a fancy rubber one, is this right ? I see partsnmore.com has one for $19.

Nope! Sounds like you are talking about the valvecover gasket. This is a rubber gasket with a rib along the top that engages the valvecover to keep it in position. Most are good for the life of the bike. When they leak they can be reinstalled with some high temp RTV silicone gasket material. Permatex makes some good ones. The actual head gasket is a metal one with a rubber overlay. There's no way to make that except in copper which is not what the original is made from and therefore may not work.

Right ! Valve cover gasket. I will take it out and clean it then try the permatex idea. Looks like it has some sort of sealant that squeezed out of the sides already.

Two problems: one is the OEM valve cover gasket is Shot, B) the Rubber grommet things on the way too many (go Yamaha!) cover hold down screws are compressed to the point of uselessness (hey it IS 20 years old!)
Change Either, preferably both items and your problem will dissapear.. OR slather the VC with GOO and hope it seals.
