Suggestions? I just purchased a 1981 xj650 midnight maxim. It starts and idles well but when riding gears need to be changed around 3000 rpm and the bike max speed is around 80km/h. The bike screams at 4000 rpm. Any ideas on where I should start to remedy this problem.

Start by reading The Information Overload Hour (link in my signature) and make sure all of the maintainance is caught up on before you start to use the bike.

Exactly why does it need to be shifted at 3,000 RPM? Describe what happens.

By "screams at 4,000 RPM" do you mean that it is making the wonderful noise of an inline four that is just beginning to hit the powerband? A properly maintained XJ comes alive at 5,000 RPM and above. You bought a sportsbike in cruiser clothing.

I don't understand the problem. Tell us about the bikes you've had in the past. If you're use to V-twins, XJ's are a whole different ball of wax. They are high revving bikes that love the higher RPM.

If you are saying that the bike's top speed at wide open throttle is only 80 km/h (about 50 mph) then there is a problem. It should easily double that. What are the symptoms when it tops out at 80 km/h? If it starts and idles well but truly will not exceed 4000 rpm then you have some issues in the carbs--at least that's my opinion.
