Maxim 650 clutch disc spec

    '83 XJ650, got the clutch apart...anyone know offhand what the spec is or any general rule of thumb for eyeballing the friction discs for wear?

    There is still pronounced "pads" all the way around, you can easily hook a fingernail on the edges of them. Wear looks pretty consistant all the way through all of them, but I don't wanna neglect to replace them if needed while I'm in there...

    Having a little slip issue from time to time, have a set of stronger than OE springs that are going in, and checking for any grooving in the basket, etc that might be making it get caught a bit on release...

    What oil are you running? I think the spec thickness is .120 inch but I am going from memory here. It could be .104, I can find out when I get home.
    As for the oil, if it has any friction modifiers in it at all, it will cause the clutch to be more slippery. Most car oils have them in it but a few do not. Do a search for oil if you need to

    Taken from the XJCD……

    Measure friction plate thickness at 3 or 4 points.
    Measure clutch plates for warpage with a dial gauge and stand.
    Replace clutch plate or friction plates as a set if any is faulty or beyond wear limits.

    Friction plate thickness – std 3.0mm ( 0.12 in )
    Wear limit – 2.8 mm ( 0.11 in )

    Clutch plate warp limit – 0.05 mm ( 0.0020 in )



    Measure the clutch spring free length.
    Replace the springs as a set if any is less than minimum free length.

    Clutch spring minimum length – 39.1 mm ( 1.539 in )
