Just purchased a maxim 650. put some cleaner on the engine and then rinsed it off as the directions said.

So i go to start it (says to start after rinsing) and it is taking a little bit to start because it wasnt running since this morning about 8 hours ago. I get it started (And im not used to the choke) and it ended up dying on me. Attempted to start it back up, pressed the electrical starter and then i let go because it wasnt starting. For some reason it was still making the starting noise even after i stopped pressing the button, i then turned the engine off and took out the key and it kept making the noise until it finally stopped.

Now i put the key in and the neutral light wont light up. Its completely dead.

Now i tested the battery and im pretty sure its dead and thats the problem. But how?

On the XJ650 i think the guy told me the ignition goes off, on, lock, and light on? Like when you switch it to the lock position, if you turn the key one more time it makes another click (While the bike is locked from turning the handlebars)

is that a "Light on" switch or something? I think the guy told me that.

If you turn into this position and take out the key, will the light still be on?

I put it into this position on the ignition 1 click after the "Lock position" so im assuming i had the light on the whole time and killed the battery (Even after i took the key out)

What is going on? Is that the mistake i made?

Im not entirely sure whats going on with your ignition. Usually, for the first start of the day, I will use maybe 3/4 choke. Hit the button and she usually fires without any issues. If it is a colder day, I may have to rev her a lil on the start.

It sounds like your "starter" button my be sticking or malfunctioning in the unit its self. You should not continue to hear the starter once you release the button.

As for the ignition settings, I have a little paint art to help your understand. Hopefully it helps. Keep in mind the on position, key turned all the way to the right and upright, the rest will make sense.

The parking light...who knows why they did this! If the key is turned max left it is in the "parking brake" position. That being said, it will keep the tail light on. Even if the key is removed, the light will stay on.

I accidentally left my parking light on for a couple hours once. It did not kill my battery but I did just install a new battery a few months prior.

    good luck

Sounds like you really cleaned-up the Old 650.
It also sounds like you drowned it.

A soaking-wet Engine is tough to start.
The whole Head gets Grounded-out. Instead of the Spark Plugs sparking, ... the Current does not make it to the Spark Plug Gap.
The Bike needs to ... "Dry-out".

(Hooking up the Hose to a Shop Vac's EXHAUST and Blowing Air into the Spark Plug cavities helps. Trying to start the Bike makes the problem worse.
You feed raw Fuel into the Combustion Chambers causing the Plugs to WET FOUL.)

You started-out with just NO Spark.
Now, you got Fouled Plugs, too.

It even sounds like you drenched the Ignition Switch or Solenoid, too.
That running-on didn't do the Bike any favors.

    Let the Bike dry.
Pull the Plugs and Clean them.
Shoot them clean with Carb Cleaner and let DRY before reinstalling.
    Charge the Battery.

And, ... Its NOT a Choke.
Its an Enrichment Circuit. Doesn't restrict AIR. Add more Gas!!!

Nest time you wash the Bike, ... remember its going to be tough to start, right away.
    Park it in the Sun.
    Let it Dry-out.

Then, start 'er-up and go show off!

i actually am sure i killed the battery. if the light stays on when you take the key out, i had that light on for 8+ hours today.... (Didnt realize theres a parking light position on the switch)

so i think when i went to start it i finished off the battery and the starter just bugged out and drained the rest of the battery...... will reply back in a half hour when the battery is charged and let you guys know if its ok.

i didnt put that much cleaner so i dont think that was the problem. the problem is i killed the battery by keeping the parking light on.

most of the cleaner went on the engine covers, not into the engine lol. i was careful.

did i mention it started up right away on the 2nd try with the starter, but then died out (battery was dying )

and then the 3rd try it bugged out and kept making the starting noise until it finished off the battery, even after i took out the key etc

    Noob mistake #1

Show off the bike to your friend.
    Park it in the garage.
put it into park position instead of lock.
light stays on for over 8 hours (Year old battery)
    start bike up
bike dies, start bike up again, starter bugs out because battery is now drained

    lol, live and learn
