Does any of you have a stock set of these on your bike? Since they are no longer available I intend to build a set but I want them somewhat close to stock. What I need is either a pic or two with some deminsions of how far out from the frame they extend. I think I can figure the rest once I have the distance from the frame I can do the mounts and hieght for the top bar from there. THx, Ken

I was checking out my friends guards....until he warned me that they drag BEFORE the footpegs. (and of course are not spring loaded)...I don't think his are stock OEM though.

After grinding my pegs twice this week I think I'll make sure the engine guard have more clearance than the footpegs. (and of course slow down on the exit ramps)

    Ken,

You can find good closeup pictures of two types of engine guards (stock and workable) for the Maxim-X at,

    www.maxim-x.com

I'm actually poking around for some aftermarket folding highway footpegs that might fit the ones on my 86 Maxim-X (I have the OEM guards - just not a digital camera to show them to you). I'm tall and after about 200 miles I really want to stretch my legs out if only briefly. If I set my boots on the guards my legs are too close to the heat from the engine and my calves get cooked.

Artie, take a look at this guys bike: http://www.maxim-x.com/pix-lescurrie.html

I'm not sure if those are the OEM guards or not (those are that same ones on my X, though), but he's got a set of highway pegs attached, although it doesn't look like you'd be stretching out too far.

85MaximXX - I have the same guards as the bike in the link I posted. The top portion of those guards sticks out 5 3/16". If you'd like, I could make a detailed part drawing of them for you. I am, after all, a mechanical engineer and I have to do this all day for work!

yes there are some good pics of on maxim-x website. The problem is they don't give the measurement out from the mount points. One of the reasons for the concern is mentioned above the stockers look to be above the height of the pegs and rounded up. If a guy comes out too far they will rub prematurely. Myself will probably not ever have this issue as I don't ride that hard anymore. I remember in my younger days scraping the pegs on my 74-75 honda 350 enduro through the corners. I have since slowed down and like to cruise more than sport ride. Even tho the X does handle like a dream and really holds the road I don't like to tempt fate anymore. I may just come up with something closer to the engine but still a reasonable distance that in the situation I have to dump I don't tear the heck out of the crank covers like the PO did on the left one.

    85MaximXX,

I will take a shot at providing you some dimensions though I think you're more likely to get better dimension from Wombat, who sounds like this is right up his alley.

Be patient...may be a couple of days (been working a lot of additional hours recently).

Wombat...thanks for the pics...I know now it at least can be done...you're right..it doesn't extend out much but anywhere I can put my feet/legs to stretch them even a little could be helpful.

If these are the stock guards you're looking for, according to the tape measure (sorry, the camera can't focus that close) it extends out about 5 1/4" from the mounting bolt. Figure 1 1/2 - 2" from the side of the engine proper.

yup them look like the stockers. Wow from your first pic it doesn't look like there is alot of room for a foot on the top of those. hmmm I may have to incorporate somthing farther out so the calve don't get too toasty. But I also want them to look close to stock and offer some protection. I guess a guy could always put some clamp ons on them as well. hmm having no job I have time to bend some up and see what i think.
