So i was having a clicking sound that was worrying me slightly, and upon reading, i concluded that it was possibly tight valves clicking or the cam chain loose.... I tried to use rick's method of cam chain adjustment with the automatic tensioner.... i didnt get a click noise or anything but i noticed that when i had a spanner on the rotor, it was more difficult to turn in parts of a revolution than others.... is this from overly tight valves?
i have been avoiding pulling the valve cover to measure and adjust valves till this winter, but i do not want to destroy my motor....
as a side note, i also had pop-back through the 4 carb, could this be caused by a too tight valve opening before it should?
can i use gasket paper for a new valve cover gasket? and or could i rtv it to generally make it work until the winter?
sorry i know that was a ton of questions at once.

-Tight valves don't "tick" they get quiet.

-If the plugs are still in and you're turning the motor over via a wrench, you will encounter "tight spots" as the cylinders come up on compression.

-The "spit back" through a carb could be a tight valve, yes.

-You have a molded rubber valve cover gasket; it cannot be replaced with a simple paper one. Whether it will be reusable will depend on how "crispy" it is. I wouldn't use RTV; if it doesn't seal with a smear of silicone grease, just replace it.

-If you don't have a service manual, GET ONE. While you can easily check the valve clearances (and should) it does take camshaft removal to replace shims in an "X" so you're eventually going to need a book.

    Thank you fitz.
the spit back could it be anything else?
the plugs were out... how would it be still tight?

    It never hurts to ask.

The spit back COULD be a number of things. An intake valve not sealing properly would be a leading suspect, though.

The motor will feel tight/loose/tight/loose as you turn it over due to the fact that you're operating the camshafts, etc., manually. I wouldn't go by that.

At some point in this process, you might want to run a compression test.
