Ok, I might be a little over excited about this one...!

Seller claims the bike runs great. It does look great! BUT... it is stuck in first gear. Says he rode it one day, no problems, then parked it and it has been stuck in first gear ever since...

Please, any thoughts. Maybe what it would cost for new tranny or any silly hickups.

I'd hate to miss this deal. I'm gonna go prepare the misses for the new addition. I'll check back... thanks

The XJ 750 did that once. Seem to remember folks saying parts from the chain guide break off and jam the shifter. We changed the oil & filter and never had the issue again.

My XJ900, early model, did that once.
Turned out to be the spring on the shift shaft was jammed.

    PRIMARY chain guide starting to break up, if it's a 650/750/900;

the 550s don't have that problem.

ANY model-- it could be as simple as a broken spring in the shift mechanism "mousetrap."

Had that happen on two XJ750's ... It was the Primary Chain guide braking up. If that's the problem you would need to split the case to fix it.

My 550 was as simple as the screw holding the segment onto the shift drum was busted

I was at the hospital in the waiting room when I posted this earlier, had to be quick...

Anyway, what would be a good general cost estimate for splitting the case? oil, gaskets, orings, sealers, primary chain guide...all things considered?

I'm looking for some bargaining leverage here....

    thanks again guys

depends on how the gaskets come off, for those, 4 of them i think.
15 or 20 for the guide (chacal) torx bit, impact driver, some locktite and yamabond.
    more labor than money

oh, tell him the swingarm has to come off to get the engine back in, because it really is easier that way but not necessary

drain the oil, take the left engine side cover/shift pedal off. You should be able to see in there to carefully remove main chain guide pieces if you're careful. Saves having to split the case at the moment. Get the pieces out of the way and you should be able to shift.

For more detail on that, get the xjcd and read the section on "Emergency Roadside Guidectomy".

Now, if the shifter forks are bent, that's a different story.

for "bargaining power" explain to him that splitting the cases to replace the chain guide will cost well more than the bike is worth, and he should be paying YOU to take it away.

The job may very well be more work than value reward. He should probably pay me...

If I invest less than the value of the parts I can pull off, and I am, as well as gain some insight, I'm in!
