A friend was good enough to give me a nice set of Motion Pro carb sticks. Unfortunately, their low on mercury. I've been looking everywhere trying to find someone that sells the stuff and coming up empty.

It looks like motion pro doesn't even sell the mercury version anymore (for understandable reasons) so it could be harder to get.

Anyone know where I can get an ounce or two of this precious quick silver?

    Thanks,

    Greg

Maybe by breaking a few thermometers?

I think that would be a lot of thermometers! And, I think mercury thermometers are hard to find these days.

Trash them and get yourself a Morgan CarbTune

You'll thank yourself for every cent spent in the long-run. I know I do...

    Make your own!

I did cost $4 for some tube.

20 ft clear tube, some 2 stroke oil, a 5 ft board or broomstick and some tape.

Form tube to a U, tape to board, put 3 ft of oil in each side (try not to ge bubbles they take a while to rise out). To be a bit flasher you could use 2 and join them at the U so you don't need to keep swapping, but I prefer the 2 at a time version (less confusing).

It might look rough but is very accurate.

Save your money for gas! :)

Try your dentist. Most ceased to use Hg fillings long ago, but it's difficult to get rid of the stuff. I'll bet your dentist would be thrilled to give it away. Just ask.

That's why I posted about the Morgan Carbtune -- no liquids at all, totally mess and hazardous material free. Never need to worry about how to store it, and it's always ready, and you can do all 4 carbs at the same time.

The carbtune looks great. I'd love to have one, but it's kind of out of the budget at the moment. Besides, having a perfect set of sticks now (sans the mercury) doesn't inspire me to get another set. I understand the hazards of mercury. It must be available somewhere.

Old thermostats will have a fair bit of mercury in them. I remember seeing one in my old highschool (in the 90's) still being used... it's enclosed in a glass bulb behind the casing - on the end of a coil.

But you should probably forget about the Hg and save up for the new setup... it's pretty sketchy stuff.

"Mercury is the second most toxic element on earth to plutonium. Toxicity of mercury has been linked to many different diseases, including autism, learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, depression, and bipolar disorder. The amount of mercury found in one mercury thermometer is enough to pollute a small lake... Toxic doses of mercury can cause developmental effects in the fetus, as well as affecting the kidney and the nervous system in children and adults."

    Yikes... Risk of Alzheimer's...

I'm not up on this tool but could you replace the mercury with heavy oil or something?

Just so you guys know.........I have extra carbtunes that I can rent to you for a reasonable amount. Since they are pricey, and are more-or-less "once a year" use tools, that might be the way to go. I have an ad over in the Parts For Sale section with the specifics.

Colortunes for rent, too! But of course, once you get one of those, you'll want to fiddle with it every couple of weeks or so, and given their much lower price, they're much more of an affordable investment....

My dad was a gasfitter and I use to break open the backs of the old household thermostats to get the mercury out when I was a kid. I still have the stuff, but there's no way it's going to be shipped anywhere this day and age!

Apparently last year about this time. Mercury was put on the do not sell list and taken off all the shelves. Mac tools snap on and the rest of the too distributors were told to stop selling replacement mercury for their carb sticks. I also have not been able to find any. Mercury is bad stuff but if you respect it it can be used. As far as finding some. Near to impossible. I am also an avid prospector and cannot find any. I have not used any yet but their are safe ways to recover it. I do find it on gold that I find. It is dang near impossible to find. Old thermometers are your best bet.
