I've read about this happening to a couple of guys but haven't seen it myself until.. now!

    Spot the missing bolt!

and the result of a light touch on the brakes doing about 40Km/h...

The pic shows the rod without the arm but it was all attached nicely still, albeit snapped from the drum cam altogether and the little wear indicator was nowhere to be found.

Exciting stuff as my first thought was that the selectors just threw a gear... then i released it was the brake pedal that jumped up violently and not the gear lever!

Lucky you didn't come off ... happened to a friend of mine on his kwaka' but it was a cast alloy stay that broke in two and locked th wheel in traffic and he went down, he's ok but th bike was very injured. It was my impression that the stay had seized on it's bolt not fallen out, they should have a split pin to seal th nut.

Isn't that one of the bolt/nuts that has a cotter pin in it?
Sorry to hear about the misfortune....

I'm glad the bar didn't drop down onto the road as it would have thrown the backend up into the air if it stuck in the bitumen.

Yes it was meant to have a split pin in it. Now I'm doubting a few things since I have rebuilt this from a stripped frame.

I've put a new bolt and nyloc nut in its place till I source the original bolt and in the meantime I'll be rechecking all those split pin locked nuts!

    You're a lucky fellow.
    The whole Brake Assembly spun.
The Brake Activating Rod got wrapped around the Axle.
The Adjuster Threads are visible in the picture.

That Cam Activating Rod shearing saved you from locking-up he brakes.
That would have been an adventure.

At first it bummed me out that the cam activating rod had sheared... but after taking another look at the possible outcomes, I'm very glad it did that is for sure!

Just ordered the original new from Yamaha, still got a few in stock by the looks of things. $7.00 for peace of mind works for me.

    90109-08368-00 Bolt
    95303-08700-00 Nut

I'll pop in to the newsagent and grab a scratchie while I'm there, good idea!

Lost on the scratchies but after about half an hour of cycling through my tools I now know it isn't a huge job to check each external bolt.

Didn't take too long at all and will now become part of my routine also.

And here's a beer to maintenance with a tuned eye .. on looking at this again it is amazing th brake cam broke, musta been th angle of th dangle .. did th brake come on at all ?? I have th scars to prove lack of maintenance from riding a mates bike ages ago, was th worn out swing arm bushes (most likely) ending in a tank slapper, horrible experience.

I was coming up to a set of lights really slowly and mostly using the front brake when I just touched the rear pedal a little and it didn't even feel like the rear brakes came on at all. Just a crack and the pedal pushed my foot up.

+1 on the maintenance and I can't say why that bolt came out except I must have neglected to tighten it and/or put in a split pin when I assembled the swingarm and fitted it to the frame... out of sight, out of mind... not a good thing and not a good excuse either. Kicking myself over this one.

here's a silver lining for you and a -1 for me. you inspired me to do a inspection------ I got 2 (had) missing split pins. axle bolt and the same bolt you had break. Also gonna replace all my cables now and rotors.
maybe this should be a sticky?
