I replace the wheel and everything thing seems to be aligned properly do I have to have that washer?? Does anyone know what size the washer is so I can pick one up if I have to have it.. Thanks for any Help..

Im not sure on the size, but YES you need the washer. You're not gonna help anything by "second guessing" the engineers who spent literally millions of dollars designing the XJ lineup... Sure they made minor consessions for EPA and Safety standards (the original exhaust por ejemplo) but across the board they did one hell of a fine job balancing the design.... Get a safe one n go enjoy your scooyer!

You need the washer because otherwise the axle (or nut) would be bearing directly on the casting.

Take the axle nut to an auto parts store; have them look in their METRIC fasteners and find a washer with the same ID as the hole in the nut (which should be around 14mm.)

Most common auto parts stores (Autozone, O'reilly, etc) have terrible selections of metric hardware. Some NAPAs are good, as are most Carquests. A better bet, in my experience, would be an Ace or True Value hardware store. These usually carry a full selection of Hillman or Forney hardware, which is pretty comprehensive.

Sorry I should have said "real" auto parts store. (Preferrably one with a wood floor.)

Is the front shaft the same size as the rear because I now have the front tire off to replace rotor and caliper and it would be easy for me to bring the front shaft into a store to fit a washer??

Not sure. Is it 14mm in diameter where the washer would go?

Front and rear shafts are different diameters.

I'd say, YES, you need that washer!!
Believe me when I tell you, Yamaha wouldnt waste money putting a washer there if it wasn't needed!
As others have said, that washer is to keep the wheel drum from riding on the frame and to spread the surface area out.
There are so many parts on FLea bay and others, don't be penny wise and pound foolish!
