Does anyone have a picture of the air/fuel mixture screws? There on the carbs (correct?) but the only screws i see if the valve clearance screws for carbs 1,2,4. and also the carb float bowl screws.

Still learning guys! I'll get there. (BTW today i just relised my float bowls were on the wrong carbs with some of the float screws facing the wrong way)

Top of the carbs just forward of the chrome hats you'll see a tower on each carb. Most likely the brass plugs are still in yours. See thread on hoe to drill and pull those out.

If you cant find the Screw ... you likely have THIS Anti-Tamper Plug installed in the Housing.

The plug needs to be removed.
You need to Drill the Plug's center just through.
Take extreme caution not to touch the BRASS Screw just beyond the Plug.

Rickomatic, my 82 xj650 carb area around the mixture screw doesn't look at all like the pic above. I'm thinking maybe the carbs are different between years.

The big dogs will chime in soon for most of your questions. Do all the plugs soot up or just 1 or 2? Have you sniffed the oil fill hole to see if there is gas in the oil? No gas spots on the ground?

you are right. Awfully poor mileage for one of these lean running 650's.

The mixture adjust is for the idle circuit but from what I've read it does carry over into the high speed circuit.

Sweet thank you guys i see them. The cover is sticking out and attached to something though

    Problems ive been having inclde:

    sluggish response under 3k
    weird idling
lite colored smoke for 5 sec on startup
gas in the carb boot (Float bowl to high?)
Bike seems like its a 250cc. wouldnt run 0-60 in under 5 sec : P

The Photo is a Mikuni Carb.
They are in the SAME Place on Hitachi.
Just to the right of the Enrichment (Choke) Valve.
There is a FLAT "Shelf: right there on Hitachi's.
The "Shelf" will either have an open hole to look into and see the Screw Head
Or, ... be Plugged and the Screw nestled below the Plug ... needing the Plug's removal to adjust it.
