    Hi,

I'd like to ask what's the best way to get a bit louder sound from the stock mufflers. I really do like the looks of these often called megaphones on my xj700s (with hitachi carbs), as shown below. So I won't remove the stock airbox, filter, headers, collectorbox or mufflers. My questions are:

    - Is the muffler equiped with baffles or a perforated innerpipe to kill the db's? In the latter case, the mod would be easy to do and easy to bring back in original condition. But in the first case, what would be the best way to achieve a deeper sound? Can I just pierce the rivets to open a muffler? And afterwards attach the plate with rivets again? (most urgent questions currently

    - The bike runs fine now, except from some sputtering between 7.5k and 8.5k rpm. The valves are to be checked next weekend and a carb tuning will follow. It would be nice if I can rejet the carbs as well when I have them off for this maintenance. I read somewhere here that one better tunes the carbs before rejetting. Should I interprete that like a situation in which it runs bad, or should I also take that in account in this case?

    - How much do I need to go up in the main jet, and should I change the other jets as well?

Unfortunately other topics haven't really discussed the varying methods to mod the stock muffler (e.g. with an aftermarket perforated pipe or lollipop baffler). Hence this topic...

    Thanks!

    Re: Header mod questions

The headers aren't anything but double-walled straight-through pipes.

The collector box, on the other hand, DOES contain exhaust-tuning magic of some sort; accomplished with a series of baffles.

You can generally get away with changing the mufflers without having to re-jet; lose the collector box and then you will need to.
