I should note that this injury came as a result of working the bike, not riding it, but still proves that you can never be too careful.

I finished putting the back end together and was adjusting the chain tension. I had gloves on, and the whole thing went fine.... until I stood up. A piece of my glove was stuck on the chain, and when I stood up, a zipper on my pants caught one of the teeth on the rear sprocket. And pulled my thumb right into it. 8 stitches later, the doc tells me I broke the bone in half (wasn't surprising since a tooth went right through my nail and shattered it), and that I won't be able to ride for a couple weeks. I can't even work on the bike since it was an open wound and I'm terrified of getting an infection.

Moral of the story: Take your time and be careful. Accidents happen, but most are preventable.

    Pics or it's not true!

J/K man... Holy what a terrible stroke of luck, OUCH!!! Hopefully it wont affect the wrenching for long, or the riding for that matter!

WTF, please say you have more than a zipper in the normal place.
when you get to be my age, getting up off the floor isn't something you just do. it's something you plan for a few seconds. :)

Glad you're mostly alright. Back in college I had a friend with an old GS550 that was told he had to adjust chain tension while the bike was running on the center stand, he lost part of his pinky doing that.

Lol thanks for the support guys... if you don't believe me, pm me for pics haha

I definitely lucked out, it could have been a LOT worse. It'll all heal and I'll be back to kickin ass in a few weeks. Only part I'm bummed about is missing a couple weeks of riding. The only things the bike is waiting for is new gauges (which are on my bench awaiting reassembly), and a start of the season carb cleaning. So hopefully it won't take too long to get back on the road after I get rid of this tiny cast.

Polock... it's funny, my grandpa used to say the same thing :p

Hope you fell better soon man!
It's a good reminder to be cautious .
My bike started to fall when I was working on it 3-4 weeks ago
and I "caught it" hurt my back and just kept on working
but then my back was out for 2 weeks. I still think I am 18 and not 50, LOL

    Ouch, nasty stuff.
I was trying to take the chain guide out of the bottom of the open crankcase when the bolt suddenly released and i sliced up my wrist on the (very very sharp) crankcase edge.
I put the bolt right back and decided to leave it in.

I hear ya Fitz, it's brutal. We all need that little reminder once in a while, especially with riding season starting in lots of places, but you just hate being the guy providing that story.
