How y'all doing? My name is Trash and I'm new to the four bangers. Had a few xs650s and an xs850 now I have an xs1100, an xj650(hadn't worked on it, lookin like a parts bike so far) and I just squired an immaculate maxim x. I will be harassing the he'll outta y'all, so I want to apologize in advance. I'm gonna go ahead and start out with a question: the maxim x, is it rare/valuable? Got it in trade and going to pick it up in the morning, I just have no clue what these bikes are worth

welcome to the site trash. think you will like it here. Maxim x they only made 2 years i think around 8k of them. They are not worth much yet maybe $1500-2k in that ball park for the most part. The performance will surprise you big bike power in a little package 5 valves per cyl

Don't worry about feeling alone Trash, there's a bunch of you Georgia boys here. I expect someone to post a "how to" for a still<LOL>. A projaholic huh? Well, you will fit right into this group. As you can tell, I'm new here also....lurked a few days then joined when I saw the level of talent here. Welcome.........

What Cutlass told you is spot on but the real value as far as I can see so far is the low cost of parts and the reliability. As far as collectability, yeah I figured there might be a decent value to the turbo when it was complete but its not near as high as some other bikes.

The Maxim X pioneered Yamaha's 5-valve watercooled XJ motor.

It's got quite a powerband, but the added complexity of water cooling (radiator, water pump, thermostat, all that groovy stuff) and shim under bucket valve adjustment.

Which means pulling the cams to adjust the valves, X20. (Almost as much fun as a Ducati, but we won't go there.)

On the upside, they are relatively rare, and fast as stink. That motor immediately became the basis for the first FJ series (but with CHAIN DRIVE!)

I didn't know the history behind that bike Fitz, thanks for posting it. While we we roadracing many eons ago, I was asked to build a KZ650 for a track friend. I did the work and two races later he tells me that he missed a shift and spit a shim....with all the expected results. I'll never complain about having to remove a cam or two again....unless it's a belt driven desmo...My Vstrom has an underbucket arrangement and we have a lot of novice mechanics able to do it without too much trouble.

Midnight, where you live you don't need a still, just go out and pan for gold for a half hour and go buy 20 cases!! Last summer my daughter and I spent the day in your town at the "Consolidated mine".....and we got to spend the 4th there so we enjoyed the towns fireworks show!!

Well the bike wouldn't turn over. After a little soaking to loosen things up, a bit of rewiring, and Gee Willigers Batman! That thing is blowed me away with the power it had. I have never had a bike suprise me like this one. I've got to get pictures for you guys. Just between working on that, my xs1100, and I just went and picked up an airhead xj700 I've been distracted. I decided to give the x to my stepdad. He'll keep it out of the weather(best I can do is holy tarps) and it'll get rode just enough to keep it from gumming. It seems the clutch is stove up on the airhead, hopefully it'll keep up with the x when I unglue it. And get shed of these hitachi carbs. I don't know about how y'all north georgia boys do it, but around here we the white lightning is fuel for our hides and our rides
I'll see if this airhead pic will post for y'all. I know y'all love the pictures

Boy Trash, the XS sure didn't last long....got it running then ZERRRROOOM...gone to dad? When the XS1100 first came out, it was THEE fastest bike in the world. It didn't stay at the top for a real long time but I THINK that it was the first bike to break into the 11's if I remember correctly.

Glad you got the XS running though, another one brought back from the brink and now on to the 700. You'll have that running in no time, I'm sure but don't count on it keeping up with the xs1100.

Since you are dealing with tarps and understand that nothing kills a bike faster then Mother Nature, maybe you have space for one of those tupperware sheds? My house came with one thats a good 6 by 8 feet and I use it for the lawn mower and stuff and it does stay dry and I can't imagine it cost very much.

[IMG]Well it was the maxim-x I give my stepdad. It is far too nice for me to keep around here. I'm still working on it and the xs1100, and I'm curious as to how they'll line up performance wise. When I first busted it off I had a rack of bs38s on it and I couldn't keep the wheel on the ground. I have yet to have the xs do that. Got to pick up some parts and get back to it today. Here's the maxim-x

Ohhhh, I got confused, I thought that you had given away the xs1100. A lot of folks didn't like the styling but it went like stink.

I've never been a cruiser guy other then enjoying a nice 300 round trip on a friends 75 Superglide. It had electric and kick and I really enjoyed riding it....sure is different then any other bike I've ridden. I had a 79 GS750L and hated the riding position but the restoration came out nearly perfect so I kept it a couple years.

Good luck getting them on the road.

Dont you mean fz fj is only 4 valves per cyl

Jeff the xs 11 ran 11.82 i believe the x ran 11.77 just doesnt make near the low end grunt of the 1100 both tests were from cycleworld
