I picked up and '82 Maxim XJ 750 earlier this week, not running, and been poorly worked out by multiple PO's. First things first - getting the motor running. PO states the head gasket blew and started spewing oil all over and causing the bike to bog down and die on the freeway. Looking at the motor, majority of the fresh oil looks like it came from the valve cover gasket (easy fix). I did I compression check and got ~ 145 in each cylinder (great!). My question is... Is there an oil level relay that will shut off the bike if the level is too low? I'm working on getting the battery charged up to see what this thing does with some gas going to it.

This bike needs A LOT of parts replaced.. I need to go through a microfiche and look up the less obvious parts that are missing.

Yes, that is electrical tape holding the gauge cluster and headlight together.

I have seen much worse! Looks as though your seat is on bass-ackwards.

No such oil relay. You visually check oil level with the bike on centerstand, and the "oil light" on the dash is low level, not low pressure.
Spend $10 on the XJCD ordered thru this site.
Do those hiway pegs fold, or are they welded solid?

Well I put the battery back in and added a quart of oil (to be fully changed later  ) and ran some gas into the carbs.. and after cranking for a while it fired up! It wasn't perfect but all 4 cylinders were firing!

Now that I know it runs, i'm going replace the valve cover gasket, check valve clearances, and re-torque the head in case it actually was leaking a bit. The rest is cosmetic... :D

Yes the highway pegs do fold, i'm curious to see how i'll like them (my previous bike was a Maxim 550).

And no, the seat isn't backwards, just a terrible recovering / padding job.
