I picked up an '82 Seca 750 on eBay Friday.

    eBay Listing

I could hardly turn it down for $760.

Needless to say, it's not as pretty in person, but it's not too bad. It was located about 40 miles south of me so I had a buddy drive me down and I rode it back.

About 5 miles into the ride, I discovered a pretty major problem. The front brakes were totally locked. They were free when I picked it up.

This put me in a real pickle. What to do. Thank goodness there was a little convenience store across the street and they had a bottle of 'liquid wrench'. I squirted the calipers, trying to be careful not to get any more than necessary on the pads and the disks and surprisingly. They freed right up. I cleaned the disks as best I could and head out cautiously.

I'm pleased to report that after that, there were no problems. The front brakes worked fine the rest of the way home, though they will be getting an overhaul presently.

    Other issues I've discovered:

    1. Fog light doesn't work - might just be the bulb.
    2. Light in instrument cluster out - hoepefully just a bulb.
    3. Choke not working - I think the sliding choke is just frozen. Cable looks ok.
    4. Front Brake lever end busted off - should be cheap to fix.
    5. Clutch actuator (not sure of the part name - the part where the clutch cable connects to the clutch mechanism at the case) - It's working, but I have a spare on my extra Turbo motor that I will install.
    6. Left front signal is bust and held on with a zip tie - Still works though and a replacement shouldn't be too hard to find.
    7. Broken tab on battery cover - Still stays in place and as I recall the CDs have an article about fixing this.
    8. Rust on several parts, though nothing that concerns me deeply.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased. The plastics are in good shape, with the exception of a missing tab on the battery cover. This must have sat outside for some time in order to get rusted like this, but, again, nothing too bad.

The motor and the tranny seem as solid as an bike I've ridden.

I'd never ridder, or even seen a Seca 750 before, so I didn't know what to expect. I like the riding position a lot. A bit more laid back than my 650. I like the shape of the seat, but it seems a bit hard. Not sure it would be as comfortable for a long haul.

I intend to change the fluids, rebuild the front brakes, give her a nice cleaning and do some riding.

I'll get some pics up to the gallery as I can.

You've got quite the bike list going there, Greg! I wish I could find bikes that cheaply around here. You can't really get a running, rideable bike here for less than $1k, most of the time an older XJ in decent rideable condition goes for anywhere from $1300-1800. You must either have a huge garage, or a very tolerant wife. :D

I'm lucky in the sense that I have a large garage, though I certainly can't fit a car in it! And I have NO wife. I've also been lucky to be able to find all of these bikes very cheaply. A quick run down:

    '82 XJ650RJ Very good condition, less than 4K original miles - $950.
This is by the way, my favorite bike of all time.
'82 Goldwing Very good condition $1600.
'82 XJ750R Good mechanical condition, so so appearance - $760
    '83 XJ650LK Turbo -not running. Bought as a project - $600
'82 XJ650LJ Turbo bought not running for parts for the above Turbo. Came with a mc trailer! - $375
    '88 XLH 1200 - Beautiful -$3500.

I paid a lot more for the Sporty but it's worth more than I paid. I've wanted one for ages and thought what the heck. It's no XJ, but then again, no XJ is a Harley!

    Greg

BTW. Not sure about this but. I actually bought this 750 for a friend and it turns out that he doesn't want it. I may hang on to it, but if there's someone here that's interested, I might sell it.

I have a list that would rival any ... atleast in terms of quantity ... and I do have a super super wife ... Though of late I feel that I could be with another woman and get less of a cold shoulder than if I spent it looking at a bike ... but then the shoulder warms up pretty quickly ... and no I aint looking at another woman ... bikes are much better ... except the one chick I got ...
    Here is the list - I currently own a pair of GS500's - my 7th and 8th, a water and air max - both 700's, 2 eliminators one 900 and one 1000 and I owned 4 at one time at the same time, a Virago 1100 my third in that series, a Kz440 + a parts bike ... I just sold a Vulcan 750 my second, I also have owned and sold 2 katana 600's, 3 nitehawk 650's 83-85, a kawi 454, a VX800, an SV650, a shadow 600, a ninja 600 prolly more I forget right now.
At any given time I am selling a few and possibly buying or working on a few for other people.
    Cool.
    Srinath.
