Picked up a XJ750 of unknown year yesterday. Seller was a really nice guy, gave me a great price, but the tank had gone into a project bike of his (street fighter style Virago).

Good news was the bike ran great (to both our surprise, and the surprise of the guy who'd been riding it when it 'broke' and ended up getting stashed for 8 mos.) And the seller was willing to include the Virago's tank in the deal so I could have something to hold gas while I worked on it. But hey, it looked a lot like it would actually fit with just a tiny bit of banging to widen the tunnel...

5 hours later I've chopped the front mounts off the XJ and moved them back / up as far as possible on the gusset, cut out the rear tank support and have it jacked up 4" higher on a hoop of bar stock, and she's looking like a daily rider. Seller had a full shop and let me do all this work before I'd even paid for the bike (though I did spring for lunch). The seat actually does go down and lock i I push it hard enough, so its really just a matter of a cm or so of bolt head in the way - I figure cutting a hole in the plastic seat pan will fix that nicely.

New tank is much narrower than the old one, so the engine looks bigger and the bike looks lighter. I'm gonna cafe it anyhow, so I don't mind that the side panels don't match the tank (seller wanted them anyhow). Bike now has a TON of space in the tunell just in front of the seat, so I figure to put pods on the carbs and tuck the fuses etc up in the new void.

Will be a work in progress thread in the custom section, gonna kick that off with some pics of the mounting bracket mod (haven't taken any yet).

You can get the year from the plate attached to the steering stem. What version Virago tank did you get? Looking forward to the detailed write-up.
