Could someone tell me 1) what effect does crackes in the boots have on perfromance and 2) what effect does a bad pickup coil have on performance.

How do would I know there is a problem with the pickup coil or cracks in the boots?

Also, I just finished cleaning and rebuilding the carbs. Starts and runs fine now, but I think that the carbs still need sync'd. The take off is slugish and the pickup is slow to respond. I've read something about fine tuning to about 2 1/2 turns. But, I'm not sure what is to be set at 2 1/2 turns. Help me out here!

    Thanks in advance.

ok are you talking about cracks in the intake manifolds and a bad pick up coil will make that plug miss so you wont have as much power and some cylinders will be working harder than others.

I'm talking about the rubber hoses that connect to both sides of the carbs!

the boots between the carbs and the head could leak outside air into the intake, causing a lean mixture and usually ends with a misfire on one or more cylinders.

with the engine running spray starting fluid on the cracked boots and see if the misfires go away.

a bad pickup or trigger coil will usually make a terrible misfire (no spark) if it even runs at all.
