I've got a really slick bobber in the shop for a non functioning charging system. I've got it traced to improper wiring AND a bad voltage regulator. Of course all the stock connectors have been cut off.

Here is where I need help:

The voltage regulator has 3 wires - brown, green, black. I believe the brown goes to (+) and the green and black connect to the green and black on the exciter coil.

I don't believe the black should be grounded.

Could one of you guys have a look at yours and confirm I've got it right? I really don't want to buy a manual for this little job.

Even better, if one of you guys has a link to a manual or can post a PDF of the electrical diagram I'd be grateful.

    Thanks.

The XS is a little bit different than the XJ, the regulator and rectifier are separate. Of course the wire colors are different too.

Based on the XJ wiring, and other Yamahas with a field coil and separate regulator, I don't believe that either side of the field coil gets grounded. Would like confirmation from someone with a working XS400 charging system though.

    Sorry, it's an 80 - SOHC.

Finding lots of diagrams on thechopperunderground which will be very useful. Not finding any XS400 diagrams though.....

Sorry that I just noticed this thread. I'm rebuilding an 80 XS400 and have all the manuals and wiring diagrams. If you still need, I can send whatever you need.
