I have a 1982 XJ650, on my last ride it lost power on the freeway and developed a knock, which i attributed to a spun big end bearing. i haven't opened the engine, and have just parked it.

i am at a fork right now. How difficult is it to remove an engine? I have absolutely NO place to work on it, other than on the side of the road. Would an XJ750 engine fit?

Should I even bother? The bike is heavily modified (frame and otherwise), it still has bits not installed, and it pains me to have it die this way.

If it is a big end, look around for another motor.

it's not difficult to remove the engine, just time consuming:

seat off, tank off, exhaust off, swingarm off, u-joint off, carbs off, oil drained, filter housing off, wiring harness disconnected, coils off, horns off.......... then engine out.

Put the other engine in. a 650 engine will pop right in. A 750 needs other mounts, cdi box, jets changed....

If you need an engine, though, PM me. I have a few here. If you're in PA as your name seems to indicate, you may not be too far from me--I'm in central NY just about a bit over an hour north of Binghamton.

Yes, an xj 750 engine will fit, but there are modifications that need to be made so that it will work.

My question is: if you say you have "absolutely NO place to work on it", why are you thinking about doing any work on it.....especially an engine swap? I don't get it----

I am in Los Angeles, PA in the name stands for Public Access (it's a name of a song). i have done all the work on it since, and am playing with the idea of swapping the engine as well. Initially, i felt that since i lost my garage, i couldn't do anything, but i just can't let the thing go that easy and since so far everything has been rather easy to do (compared to working on a car), i figured i'd ask.
