Hello, my neutral light stays on even when in gear. Been restoring this 82 xj750j and almost finished with all major things. Just noticed the neutral light stays on all the time. Any thoughts? Thanks

It seems like the neutral switch was bypassed by grounding the snesor wire. Check under the left side of the frame on the oil pan for a sky-blue wire. It should be hooked to a switch that resides in a recess on the oil pan. If it is connected to the frame, or to the oil pan, then it was bypassed (likely due to a sticky neutral switch). It is also possible that the neutral switch is faulty (the switch just connects the lead to ground when the transmission is in neutral), or that the neutral switch lead was bypassed at another location.

Thanks so much for the reply. I checked for the sky blue wire but didn't find any wire at all! The PO did alot of crazy things to this bike but I'm slowly finding and correcting them as I go. I've become well known to eBay and Amazon now! Lol. Thanks again

Look again to be sure. It's tucked closely to the frame and is part of a bundled pair of wires. One goes to the oil level sensor (blk-red), and the other to the neutral switch (sky blue).

Ok I will check again tomorrow. I did see the oil level sensor wires so maybe the blue one is hidden with them. If the blue wire is there but not attached to anything then the neutral light should be off , right? Unless it's been grounded somewhere else down the line? Where else does it go besides the dash light?

The neutral switch controls part of the safety interlock relay.
The light is only on if the circuit is grounded.
I'll link the wiring diagram tomorrow if someone dosen't beat me to it.

Thank you. That would be great. I'm not sure how much if any that safety interlock system works. Ive replaced the side stand switch,it was gone. The clutch switch is gone, the brake fluid sensor is gone, and I'm still checking. The PO removed a lot of things!
