Hey everyone! I'm soon to be the newest owner of an 82 xj650 maxim.. very excited. The only problem with the bike.. which might not even really be an issue(maybe user error?) is when you start the bike in neutral then switch to first gear.. it seemed to cut out like he wasn't holding the clutch. When I rode it around the block, it was fine.. no stalling. Is this because the bike was cold? Any help or critisism is useful to me since I'm picking the bike up Wednesday.

You might have to take up some slack in the cable, you should have max 1/8" at the perch.

Sounds like an adjustment issue. Lube cable and adjust, if that doesn't solve the problem may have to replace the cable.

See.. it never did it when I pulled it out of his garage to go for a test ride, until it started pouring rain (which sucked after a 45 min drive to the guys house).. only when he had it in the garage.. so.. I might be having to appologize for wasting time.. I didn't even think about the kickstand, so I'm not positive. Thanks for the quick replies though! Hopefully I'll be able to ask more probably stupid questions if this sale goes through :)

I've done it and started freaking out as to why it died.... Move it around, try it again, not realizing I put the stand up while moving it and question what happened for a few miles til it occurs about the side stand safety switch.....
