I don't know how long my old clutch cable had been on my XJ900 before I bought the bike nearly 4 years ago but even around 12 months ago I reckon it was past its "use by" date.

But, even though it was getting harder to pull in and more lately, sticking as you let it out; i.e. not smooth but in definite incremental steps which means take up at the clutch was not smooth but more on and off without much between, I persisted, as we do, in the face of other priorities, bike and non bike related.

Then could stand it no more and I finally got around to replacing the clutch cable on the weekend and what a difference!

The old clutch cable made me feel like I was working out my left hand on a Bullworker (look it up those under 40!) but the new one is smooth and feels comparatively light by comparison.

Can't remember what I paid for it but got it off a supplier on ebay for I reckon under $30 from memory...brand new, after market I guess but fitted perfectly.

Whereas before it was a real chore to hop on the bike and change gears with a heavy and sticking cable, this recent change has made the experience more enjoyable and my left hand after a short ride doesn't feel like I've been crushing stones with it.

A highly recommended and cheap upgrade that makes the clutch action feel like you're on a new bike!

I also recommend keeping all cables well lubed on the bike.
