New member here - just picked up my first bike today, a 1982 XJ650. The bike runs, but has to be push started because the starter isn't functioning properly, has new front tire, plugs, battery, and is inspected until May 2011.

There was a dent in the tank but I've popped it out already with 10 minutes of work. Unfortunately, on the way home, the petcock started leaking. Apparently the previous owner thought he could silicone the petcock instead of buying a $30 rebuild kit...So, we parked it and hulled it the rest of the way with a pickup.

All in all, I'm super happy with the purchase and can't wait to get her up and running top notch.

I have already gained knowledge about the bike from searching around and here and am looking forward to learning more! And yes, I will check the rear brake for delamination :D

This is not the greatest picture but more to come.

Great deal and welcome to the site. Check with Chacal for the petcock parts at top of page(XJ4Ever). What plans do you have: resto-custom-bobber?

I will add that the starter clutch on the bike seems to be slipping / sticking. I'm going to try to flush everything with seafoam but I have a bad feeling I will be splitting the case open :(

Change the oil; use motorcycle-specific oil, 20W40 or 20W50. Make sure the petcock (and floats) haven't ganged up on you and filled the sump with gas.

Run it for a while with the correct oil in it and see how the starter clutch behaves before you start tearing into anything.

I ordered some parts from XJ4Ever and installed them last night! I rebuilt the fuel valve and I now have a start button and the oil changed to gtx 20w50 :D

The battery was low at 12.39v so I threw on the trickle charger over night and she fired right up this morning

Even though it was super chilly I still rode to work :p
