I'm one of those guys who most of yall snicker about.... a first time owner who doesn't know crap about motorcycles aside from the fact that they are fun to ride.

But I want to learn. First, I don't know exactly what kind of bike I own and when I google VIN and engine numbers I don't get much help.

Could one of y'all look it up using that CD? I might buy it later but I'd rather start by finding an appropriate owner's manual. For example, I don't even know how to change the oil or the filters so the CD is a bit advanced. I need to start from scratch!

    VIN starts with JYA1FG
the number on the engine is 1FG-006878

Help finding what I own would be appreciated. There is a link to a photo of the bike in the sig line if that helps.

I bought the bike from a mechanic who rebuilt it. He said the carbs are fine but the bike doesn't always idle correctly. After a long ride, the idle is especially bad and will easily die at stoplights if I don't goose the throttle periodically. I'd like to start figuring out what is causing that as well as knowing how to do basic upkeep.

    Thanks again in advance

I see you're 30 miles south of me, I wouldn't mind taking a look at it.
I've got basic tools, a Colortune, and syncing gear.

Search this site for : oil change - - oil filter

i downloaded the service manual and printed off the pages about basic upkeep like oil changes, air filter, battery...

would definitely appreciate any help and i'd definitely drive up some time

it's weird... after it runs for a minute or two the bike will idle on its own for a long time. but after i ride it for 15 minutes and stop at a stop light, sometimes it dies out. also if i ride for a bit then stop to go in a store or fill the tank, sometimes it has problems starting back up

when it dies at stop lights AND i have trouble starting it back up... well that just plain sucks lol

I've been reading these forums alot on the chance that some of the expertise would rub off and I came up with a theory.

Somebody posted the other day that their XJ was cranking up AFTER he released the starter button and somebody else replied that that was a classic example of a voltage problem... not enough of it.

My bike was doing that too. Furthermore, I was having idle problems so I went down to AutoZone and bought one of those battery rechargers.

I have been plugging my bike in every night for the past week. The bike starts right up in the morning, which is good, but the really nice part is that the bike idles like a champion now.

I didn't know a weak battery would affect how the bike idles?

From what I have read here the bike runs off the battery until a few thousand RPM where the alternator is generating enough to run it. So what you are seeing makes sense but not the first thing you would think of for sure.
