Hi everyone i have just signed up since i have just purchased an 82 xj1100 maxim. The bike was in pretty good condition when i got it and i rode it all the way back from San Jose ca to Sacramento with no issues. the previous owner had the bike for around 2 months and had purchased it from the original owner who had kept it garaged. i was looking through craigslist looking for one of these to get since they look so nice and was originally looking to get a 550 or 650 but i got a good deal for this 1100. first thing i did was to drain the oil which came out looking pretty clean but the oil filter was really dirty not gunky but just really dirty same with the air filter im thinkin these were never changed, the bike has 26k miles on it. I changed these and now im planning on getting some steel braided brake lines for obvious safety reasons oh and also a new set of spark plugs even though the ones on it currently look fairly ok but i just want to start with everything fresh. i was trying to open up the allen head bolts for the middle gear and final gear oil but i feel like they were going to start stripping. For the most part i plan to keep it mostly stock for now. But anyways i just want to say that this site has been of great help and i look forward to learning more about these awesome bikes

Welcome to the site, make sure that you check the rear brake for delamination and your valve clearances.

It sounds loke you have a pretty clean bike but these are two things besides the beake lines that are overseen .
