Just wanted to say Hey and ask a question since I see there's lot's of very knowledgeable people here.

This is my first XJ 81' XJ650 Maxim and she's been a fun little bike. [IMG]
This is How I got the Bike.

I got the Bike this year and it was partially Modified when I got it. So since I had no clue about what was done to it or the condition of it I tore it down to the Frame. B.T.W she runs and rides Great!. Now as I was cleaning up the engine and making sure all was in spec I noticed these little rubber Pieces stuck in between the cooling fins all over it
My question is #1 are these needed? and #2 if so what are there purpose? I can only imagine maybe for support for the cooling fin's. As this is my first XJ and I have never seen these on anything else I have worked on I figured this would be the right spot to ask. sorry so long winded.

they are to help stop the fins from buzzing and reduce vibration.

Hello, and welcome to the forum from Denver!

Those little rubber plugs are vibration dampers for the cooling fins, around 4k and going up to appx. 5k the bike gets a natural vibration in the engine that is quite loud and very noticeable without those little guys. Every one was missing from my bike when I first got it and I thought that there was something seriously wrong with the engine.
But with the fine folks on this forum I found out these little guys exist and that I should have them on my engine, mine took appx 15 to dampen the vibrations. The vibration is still there but a lot more tolerable now.

    Hope that helps,
    Massimo

    Welcome aboard.

To give you a little info about what I see that has been done to the bike.
It has been hardtail bobbed with a peanut tank, aftermarket Z bars, and 4-1 exhaust with pods.

Basically a rat bobber as shown in the pic.
