Hows it going everyone? Im new to site, but I have been lurking around for a few weeks now. You all seem to be great group of people! I was hoping you guys/girls could help me out.

I am trying to get my bike runnning again. It is a 1985 XJ700 Maxim. It was my grandmothers bike and it has been sitting since roughly 1990!

I have allready replaced the spark plugs, and changed the oil/filter.

    I have a few question:

What is the best way to clean the inside of the gas tank?

I think I am going to need some help cleaning the carbs and getting them off the bike, does anyone know of a carb clinic in the orange county california area or someone who would be willing to teach me in person?

I found two hoses that are not connected, one is connected to the on/res/pri fuel valve, and the other is connect to the number 1 carb? (first carb on the left side?) Do you know where they go, or have picture of your carbs so that I can compare?

Do you know where I can get a repair manual that isn't so expensive?

Any and all information you can give me is greatly appreciated!

the plugs and the oil are the least of your worries right now. i know that you can get things to clean and seal the inside of the gastank, but you can just slosh around some gas in it and turn the fuel valve to prime to make sure the gas is flowing out while also draning out the fuel you sloshed around in it. I thought cleaning my carbs was going to be hard too but i did them myself thanks to the step by step forum that rickcomatic posted, you should look it up. the little hose is the vacuum line and the hose that connects to the #1 carb is the fuel line, both of these lines go on the fuel valve.

Edit: if you slosh gas around in the tank then turn the fuel valve on you may get trash in the valve. It is best to take the valve off while doing this. The fuel valve is probably still funtional even though the bike has been sitting for some time.

Welcome please clarify your question. Are you asking do the hoses attach there or are they already attached in the places mentioned?

Guessing at what you mean it sounds like your gastank is not connected. The fuel line goes from the petcock to the carbs between carb 1 and 2. The vacuum line goes from the petcock to the #3 carb manifold usually but can be connected ot any of them.

first off, i wouldn't know a 85 700 if it fell on me
this is a 82 750 and i'm thinking their close, they need a vacuum source to turn the fuel on, usually #3 like Bill said but any of them will work
the smaller hose from the fuel valve goes to a vacuum port, the other 3 ports should have a cap on them as pictured
now heres where the problem starts, the fuel valves are tricky, they leak,
when they leak the floats should stop the gas at the proper level in the carbs
i guarantee yours won't, then the motor fills up with gas and you have a big mess
basically you need to clean the whole fuel system
welcome to old motorcycles, welcome to xjbikes

Looking at this diagram, it appears you have a fuel vapor canister (emissions) on your bike. I suspect your mystery hoses connect to it in some way or another.

thanks for the digram gamuru. i was unaware of this canister. emmissions standards must have changed slightly between the time my bike was made and the time the 85 was made.

I am not sure but if you look at the serial number there should be a way to figure it out. You may also want to look under you side panels something about cali emmisions may be written there.

Thank you everyone! You all have been helpful! I think I understand a little more about the hoses.

But any and all information you can still give me is greatly appreciated!
