As I was out for a Sunday drive about 40 miles from home I was contemplating what I would do if she broke down.

I still have the original factory tool kit under the seat. Any other basic, small tools someone might suggest would be useful "by the side of the road"?

I always keep lil Larry on my bike somewhere. Best case scenario I have light to see what's up/perform necessary repair, or worst case Larry has a flashing red light so I can be seen while I call the tow company (the boss) to come get me

2nd the zip ties, a bit of duct tape comes in handy in the event of a tip over. A few of the more common metric bolts, and a master link if you have a chain

A small pair of vice grips can double as a replacement shifter.
Are you going around the block or the country?
