New Turn Signals; Need Help!

    Hey everyone, I'm here again with a new problem...

    I just finished ordering these:

    And so far they look GREAT! I'm trying to install them, so long story short I snipped the wires of my old ones and connected the new ones. They don't blink, they just stay solid when I turn the blinker on. Then I noticed a fuse heating up. I took the bulbs out and examined it and heres what I found:

    Stock: 12V32CP kk
    New: 12V21/6CP

    I have no idea what any of that means except the fact that there's a powering problem between my bulbs. I looked around and searched and so far I'm guessing I need a new relay flasher from an auto shop?

    Anyone care to help me find out whats going on?

    the bulbe need to be the same value as the stock, it's the resistance that triggers the relay.

    So rather than buying new bulbs, would I pick up a new relay?

    I suppose you could, but I wouldn't have a clue what you would be looking for.

    If you have the Yamaha self-cancelling system for your turn signals, you wouldn't be able to install a new flasher without either some custom work (see here: http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14068.html) or losing the auto-cancel functionality.

    Otherwise you'll need bulbs of the same power as stock, or lower power + load resistors to make up the difference in current draw.

    Hmm, I do believe I have the self-cancelling but not sure if it works or not. Regardless, I don't want to end up spending another $40 on new bulbs so when you say "lower power + load resistors" whats the easiest way of doing this?

    it really simple just got to a parts store buy a new electronic flasher relay thay are like 10 bucks find yours under the tank has three wires going to it you have to swap two of the wire around i forget which colors they were like blue and yellow or something like that do a search on it takes like 10 minuts to do it

    I had the same problem with aftermarket turn signals and just used the bulbs from the originals and everything worked fine. Even if you need to replace the bulbs, they aren't going to cost you $40 they would at the most be $2 or $3 each, if that. Easier to simply swap bulbs rather than swap the relay too and lose your self-canceler.

    Two things to keep in mind if you follow that thread's advice:

    1. You will lose the auto-cancel functionality. I know a lot of people don't notice it, but I rather like it, which is why I spent the time to preserve it.

    2. The G/Y wire that he has connecting to the P pin is the "enable" line from the canceller module. Most three pin flashers are designed to take ground on their third pin (the other two being +12V supply, and the connection to the turn signals). The enable line doesn't provide ground; it provides either an open connection or +12V. The flasher that these guys got from Canadian Tire (original thread is here: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=4489.html) does seem to work with the enable line connected to its extra pin, but I wouldn't bet on most other 3-pin flashers happening to work like this. If you just want it to flash, and don't care about auto-cancel, you'd be better off, IMO, either connecting a 3-pin and running a proper ground for the third pin, or using a 2-pin flasher between Br and Br/W.

    The new bulbs are dual filiment, 21 and 6 candlepower. The stock bulbs are 32 candlepower. If you wire them so that both filiments light at the same time, that's 27 candlepower and may be close enough to stock draw to run your flasher without replacing anything.

    That would be the first thing I'd try.

    Or, on second thought, if the current bulbs are 1176's, you should be able to swap in 1157's, and everything should be fine. These usually run about $4 a pair at auto parts shops.

    I just picked up a new relay for $3 at Wal-Mart and it works like a charm!
