    Hi guys. My name is Keith and I bought an 82 xj650 seca about a month ago. Bought from an older lady for $600. Having checked how much these things part out for I guess I did pretty good. It run and drives great. It's silver with the decals but the paint is shot. Luckily my father in law owns a body shop and he painted my previous bike for free so that's nice. It's got 18200 or so miles. I've put about 300 on it so far commuting. I replaced the tach cable seal and oring today thanks to the very nice write up on this site. Anyways, this looks to be a great site for info on this bike. Thought I'd say hey.

    Hi Keith;

    Check the valve clearances immediately, at that mileage if they were ignored you're approaching the danger zone.

    REPLACE THE BRAKE LINES and check the rear shoes for delamination before you ride another mile! READ: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

    Plus check the date codes on the tires. These bikes have TUBELESS tires, a blowout is a recipe for disaster. Anything over 6 years old is not safe. A lot of folks think tread life is all that matters; not so. AGE is beaucoup important.

    Hi, thanks for the info. The tires are 2 years old. The lady took it to the dealer for service this year. I don't know if the valves were adjusted though. It did get new plugs and an oil change and she said they went through it...whatever that means. I checked the rear shoes right after I read the post with the pics. Luckily they look good. I see a lot of brake shoe delamination on cars as I am an auto mechanic.
    Where do you get replacement brake lines? That would be a good idea. I also want to replace the master cylinder as it was dropped at one point and it's scraped up. I found a new mc on ebay for 30 bucks or so but I'm not sure it will fit.
