As the heading says anyone know of any newer carbs which are pretty reasonable to fit to a 1981 xj650 maxim

Unless you're into fabrication, there are no newer carbs to fit on these ancient bikes.

the carbs from all xj650 maxims and all xj 750 maxims from 1981 up to 1983 are the same except for the jetting. (there are some little differences in the 1980 xj650 carbs, but I think they are still useable on the later ones, IIRC. If you you're looking for a newer set, your best bet is to get a good set to start with, and then do a total rebuild. If you mean NEW stuff, then, as other said.....you're going into more expensive territory with fabrication, swapping systems ,etc.............. and it will probably get very expensive for you very quickly. Oh, did I forget to mention probably very frustrating, too?

Good luck, keep us posted with what you develop.
