No juice at the coils

    When I try to start my bike it will turn over but im not getting spark at the plugs... So I decided to put a test light to the coils and surprise surprise no juice at the coils...What are my possible culprits the coils are grounded and do check with the right resistance on the plug wire side and where they plug into the tci unit wires (I beleive)...

    There are two checks for the coils with a multimeter. First remove the plug caps on the end of the plug wire and check resistance between the two wires. Make sure it is on the same coil. So that would be for coil 1 on the left side plug wires one and four. You should get close to 11K ohms. Then remove the connector on the coils and check the resistance between the 2 low tension wires going to the coil. You should get 3.5 ohms here.

    All four plugs don’t get a spark? Hard to believe both coils went at once. Ok well easy stuff 1st. Make sure your engine kill switch is set to on. Check your side stand kill switch. After that maybe your TCI. If you want to check the static resistance of your coils the low voltage side is about 3 Ohms the high voltage side between plugs 1 & 4 for example is 11k Ohms with the plug caps off. A few guys here could go into even more detail so don’t be shy let us know what you find.

    The static resistance checks out good on the high voltage side and on the low voltage side..Maybe it is something with the kill switch..

    Another possibility is the pickup coils fried. But I've not hear that happening too often so I'd lean toward the kill switch giving trouble. Ohm it out and be sure it is conducting correctly and isn't pinched to ground (common problem, get a lot of bikes cheap that way).

    Thanks for the correction. I was thinking about Dyna coils and knowing that they were 3 ohm I added .5 for the difference instead of subtracting. The standard low tension side is 2.5 with a + - 20% variance according to the XJCD.

    The key word here is NO volts at the coils , one could go checking resitance till the horse started drinking and its not going to help,

    Look at any switchs that supply 12v to the coils , and if no 12v is only when on the start position , start switch is wired wrong or its the wrong type of switch , as some switchs do switch off ign when turn to the start position [mostly deisals and magnito/cdi ingnitions], so you'll have to check.
