no power at all

    hey everyone. thanks for the help in getting my oil and spark plugs changed. managed to change the oil no problem, started on the plugs, only to find the dealership sold me the wrong sized plugs. was planning on taking them back tomorrow (well, later this morning, technically). bike has been riding fine, no problems starting. (asides from it needing choke and not wanting to start in the cold.). was out at the bar tonight, rode fine leaving work, started right up. left the bar to go across the street and buy some smokes. hit the turn lane, and the bike died. sudden loss of power. turning the key does nothing. pushed it back to the parking lot, took the seat off, checked the fuses. as far as i could tell, none of them are blown. granted, i was looking at them with my lighter in the pitch dark. im guessing that i have a short somewhere, since i have no power at all. gonna go back in the morning and try and find the problem. is there anyplace in specific that i should look?

    any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

    Well, the very first question always has to be "Do you have the stock fuse panel?". If the answer is yes you need a really good arm because it needs to be chucked a very great distance.

    The stock panel is notorious for failing at very inconvenient times, often without it being apparent to the observer that there is anything wrong.

    Who wants to bet theothervagabond will go to fetch the bike and it'll start right up as if nothing's wrong with it?

    ***Assuming you still have the stock fuse block***
    Take your voltmeter with you, a pair of wire cutters/crimpers, and a couple 12/10 gage butt-connectors.

    If the bike won't start, first measure your battery voltage.... You know what? Scratch that. If you still have the stock fuse block, just replace it and then see if the bike will start. Even if the problem wasn't that, you needed to do it.

    Oh, and if the bike still won't start, try to determine if you're getting fuel and spark. No fuel is easy to fix: put gas in it. Spark's a little more complicated. You may be able to run a jumper wire from the battery's positive terminal to the Red/White wire at the coils or TCI to bypass all the safety switches. This "fix" is very temporary and will get you home. You may need to jump the solenoid to crank the bike, too. Incidentally, the only way to shut the bike off once started like this would be to disconnect the jumper wire.

    i know ive got fuel, and im pretty damn sure i dont have a spark. looks like i get to start with the fuse block. gonna head out this morning and try to bypass everything and see if i can get her home. but first a run to home depot for some wire and butt-splices. :/

    so, looked at the fuse block today. prong that hold the master fuse had moved onto the glass part. pulled it back and she started right up. gonna try and replace the fuse block tomorrow.

    What about the master power switch on the right handlebar. Bump it off and POOFT goes the electrical.
