Hi guys, being working on putting my 1982 Yamaha xj650 seca back on the road, but got a new issue.

After redoing the timing on it, it was able to start and even was able to test ride it for a couple a minutes before parking it for a week due to rain.

Well this week I wanted to go back on the road and continue testing it, but when trying to start, it sounded different. Now cylinder 1 & 4 do not fire...

I made the ignition system check as mentioned in the Haynes manual and here are the results.

    Coil for cylinder 1&4
    - Primary : 3.1 ohm
    - Secondary : 12.4 Kohm
    - Caps : 4.6 ohm & 5.9 ohm

    Coil for cylinder 2&3
    - Primary : 3.0 ohm
    - Secondary : 12.3 Kohm
    - Caps : 5.8 ohm & 5.6 ohm

    Pickup coils
    - Orange + black : 635 ohm
    -Grey + black : 686 ohm
    - Grey + Orange : 1318 ohm

I have continuity between the TCI and connector of the left coil and I have 12V to the coil too.

Sometimes by moving the steering or revving I could get all 4 cylinders to fire, but moving it or putting it in gear would make the cylinder 1&4 dead.

What could be the reason for loosing one side of the ignition out of nowhere.

**For you info I also have a spare parts bike and trying to put the other ignition system doesn't seem to help.**

    Thanks!

Did you try to swap the TCI?

Yep did that also. Something that I saw was that one of the TCI / coil set had the same number engraved on the coils and on the TCI (110), but the other combo had one coil numbered 104, the other coil 105 and the TCI 111. Are the coils/ TCI supposed to match to work or those number don't mean anything?

Well Dan you convinced me to try again! This time got better results ;)

So I've put everything back on the bike with the spare parts and tried again. Same issue, no spark on 1&4 but then I tried to mess with the headlight wires to see if something would happen.

Got on and off response and the group of wires making the most difference was the one going to the right part of the handlebars (start button). So maybe the wires got crushed making a bad connection who knows, I'm gonna take it apart before putting everything back together!

Make sure handlebar switch is tight and handlebar is clean as that's a ground.
