NO SPARK

    I just bought an '83 xj750 and know it ran when I bought it.

    I went to start it up, and no luck. The engine spins but won't catch. I checked everything fuel related, and that seems to be fine. I did a spark plug test, and there is no spark. The spark plugs are in good shape as well as the spark plug caps. Someone suggested it may be an electrical problem.

    Any ideas of where to start or how to troubleshoot this? I really want to get this running ASAP.

    Ok, now it just won't do anything. Did I kill the battery maybe? You press the start button and I just hear a click.

    Someone help me, PLEASE!!!!!!?

    have you tried to charge the battery?? and as far as the spark plugs try replacing them anyway, i had a simlar problem and i thought the spark plugs were in good shape but when i replaced them it gave me a spark then!! i would give that a try

    It's worth checking your ignition fuse as well. Sometimes the most obvious solution is right there in front of you. Although if it just clicks, sounds to me like a dead battery problem.

    a curcit tester or volt/amp meter would be in order here,(at the least)
    you could start by being sure you have power to your coils.

    If not then you could work your way bak to the source.

    you could be sure the ends are attached to the plug wires, then it might be a stator problem

    Ok...

    I charged up the battery and ran a test between the stator/coils and battery which turns up ok.

    I also added oil, because I looked and there was very little in there.

    Now, the bike doesn't even churn any more, just kind of sputters and dies.

    Still no spark, I took the plugs to a shop and they told me that they were good.

    What now?

    Don't know if you've checked this, or if is matters, but is your spark plugs properly gaped? I am thinking if there too far apart, it is not sparking (don't know if that's what would happen, just a guess)

    If your plug caps, wires and coils are good, and your fuel is good, could it be a timing issue and something is not doing something to make it spark?

    These are just guesses, just to get the people that know what their talking to jump start their thinking lol.

    One thing at a time.
    You have an electrical problem.

    The BEST thing to do is replace the Fuse Panel with a MODERN Fuse Panel so you KNOW that all the Circuits ... especially the Ignition Circuit ... is flowing juice and is protected with the right value fuse.

    Then, since you have an older bike, you examine the lengths of your Alternator Brushes. Easy to do ... just remove 3 Cap Screws and look inside the Alternator Cover.

    Following that ... you simply get back to us with what's happening and we do what needs to be done to get you back on the flight schedule.
