Looks like I'm going to pick up my second bike here in just a few hours! Owner says he doesnt have a title though. 1981 XJ650 Maxim.

Anyone out there know how hard it is to get one of these titled in NC?

Call the DMV or the state police. They should point you in the right direction.

I bought a couple of bikes from NC and brought them back to AL. One had a title and the other did not. The seller gave me a form that he signed and notorized saying he was the owner of the bike and I filled out the buyer part. Took it up to the dmv and bam I had a title. I cannot remember the name of the form but I'd imagine someone from the dmv up there would know.

Be thankful you don't live in Illinois... they absolutely will not accept a Bill of Sale... the registered owner would have to pay to request a duplicate, if your registered owner died in a house fire and you bought the bike from the mother, and you're me, you'll spend days and dollars trying to track down a solution from the state before giving up and buying another frame, registering that, and transferring everything over to the legal one.
