My last ride revealed a troubling new symptom; "notchy" shifting. It took more travel than usual to shift gears, and I managed to miss 4th and 5th more than once (not a false neutral, rather, the gears didn't change). I have a little excess play in the sifter splines which I intent to address over the winter, but I'm a little concerned as the usual snick-snick is no longer there. Could this be a symptom of a clutch needing adjustment, or is my shifter drum worn out? My clutch arm return spring is broken, so I imagine that doesn't help matters. ('81 XJ550 Seca)

I'm inclined to say your spring should be replaced before you assume anything else. Simple (and cheap, $20) things first.

Splines issue can be easily dealt with by widening the slot in the clamp on selector lever so it can compress further thereby tightening up on the splines.. takes mebe 20 mins work in total.
