So I finally got my engine out and split the case to get in and work on the starter clutch for my xs400.

turns out that the problem wasn't the clutch, it was the gear between the clutch and the starter. The shaft/pin that the gear spins on had come out and caused the gear to be banging around in there. Everything seems to be ok, I got the shaft back in no problem, but my concern is why did it come out int he first place?

I'm awaiting a new service manual for the bike (I lost mine), so I figured I would ask some questions. the parts diagrams don't snow any retainer clip or anything. Does anyone know what holds the shaft in?

If the shaft doesn't have a bolt in one end or any clips to hold it then it must be a press fit or it's held in place captively when the cover is replaced. Maybe someone had the crankcase apart and didn't get it back in correctly? If it's a press fit and doesn't stay tight anymore you are going to have a problem keeping it in.

Yea, I'm pretty sure its not a press fit. I've got a picture of the end of the shaft, I'll have to post it tonight.

the more I think about it, the more I think it was just a fluke. It could have been helped by the almost 3 gallons of fuel that overflowed into the crankcase over the winter.
