Should be 3.5 Liters / quarts with the filter change. Put in 3 liters then top up as needed to get the level to the top of the viewing window.

Right now it's in the middle when the bike's running. Should it be up on the stand when I'm checking it?

And fill it to the top of the window.
fill until the bubble just squeezes out of the sight glass.

Beg to differ, a MiCarl trick was leave the last bit of bubble, then you can tell if your carbs flood out your crank case. Sounds like the way to go.

How can you check your oil level if your window is completely black???
(or actually a nice caramel blonde - - if you're lookin at coffee, you're lookin at an oil change)

To check your oil, bike should be level, on it's center stand, engine should NOT be running!

That is somewhat of a personal preference, I am running 20/40 motorcycle oil from Mobil 1, others swear by Ams Oil motorcycle blend. I do hopwever sugest that you look for the "Motorcycle" signification on the oil that you do choose as almost every brand has one.

    SAE 20w40 or SE10 w30

Just go get some motorcycle oil from autozone.

Any oil viscosity between 10w30 and 20w50 will work just fine. Smaller numbers if the weather's cooler and/or you only do short rides. Bigger numbers for hot weather and longer rides.

I would go with whatever is recommended by the manufactuer. Mine is recommended to run 20W50 and I kinda like the idea of using the 50 weight as it is a bit thicker, and don't forget, this oil is also lubing up your trans.

Ericstnicki, you need to post your question in your own thread. It is impolite to hijack someone else's thread. I'll also mention that you can purchase the XJCD and get everything you need and a whole lot more for $10. Check out the stickies at the top of the XJ Chat forum.
Good luck to you on your new purchase.

I have a really nice xj750 maxim but would like to know more about the bike, I have put 500 miles on the bike since it has been rebuild, I am unsure how to check the oil level, also I want to note that I have used 10w-40 is this ok?

10w-40 is ok for light riding, as it gets hotter you might need to switch to 15w40, or 20w-50 to help avoid thermal breakdown on long high speed (hwy) running.
To check the oil level place the bike on the center stand. At the bottom of the clutch cover will be a little window. There will be a small air bubble in the window at the correct level. When doing an oil change use approx 2.5 quarts to fill. check for leaks then top off to correct level.

    ^ that.

The Sump capacity is cast into the clutch cover near the oil cap (2800cc), that does not include what's needed for the filter, so I drop in the 2800cc then top off after running the bike for a few minutes.

Of important note to prevent you from having slippage problems; use JASO MA compliant oil.
