I have an 82' xj750rj Seca; first time changing the oil filter (new bike for me)....took off the housing and removed the stock filter -to replace with a new stock filter; but I didn"t pay attention to whether the concave side of the filter (with the metal washer) goes towards or away from the engine. I know, dumb mistake, happens all the time when you are 69 years old. Thanks for any helpful input.

flat side towards motor . the steel washer is for the spring that goes over the bolt
I think you will find the metal washer is not part of the filter just kinda stuck to it
#8 is the spring #7 washer and you do need the spring

LOL, I've had my bike since it was brand new, probably close to 50 oil changes. I still have to look at the diagram to get it right!
