Okay so I got my carbs on, battery in, plugs in, and some fresh fuel in the tank. I try to start it and no dice. So I use some starter fluid a few times and it will finally hold an idle by itself.

Here is my major problem- I'm thinking its major but I'm hoping its not. The breather tube that is on the left side was not hooked to the airbox because I just wanted to get the thing running.... when the revs got up high enough oil would POUR out of this tube. Just idling there was nothing. Please tell me that the oil is overfilled or something and that this isn't terminal damage. What could cause this oil to be doing this?

    blow by rings...
    hole in piston(unlikely)

just look at your oil level when on center stand

if she ran when you shut her off then i would say she is still good to go

have you done a compression test?

glad to hear that you got her running

If you see any oil in the window on side-stand, you are overfilled, and you might have gasoline in your oil. If your oil looks way too runny, and smells of gas, change it. Buy Rotella-T from Wally World.

No I haven't done a compression test yet... And it was getting too dark for me to see much of anything, so checking the oil will have to wait til tomorrow. Is it normal for these motors to have any blow by?

Okay, I did a compression test and all the cylinders are right at 120. I assume this is normal since they are all the same? I'm gonna change the oil and see if I can see anything else.

Did you do the test with the throttle wide open, and all plugs pulled, and the bike boosted from a charger, or a car battery? I get 147-ish under these more ideal conditions.

Wally = Wal-Mart and the Rotella-T 15 W 40 (conventional) is the oil that seems to raise the fewest eyebrows around here. Many different oils will do. Search a couple oil threads for the final word on oil.

No I just pulled one plug at a time, just off the battery, and no throttle. They are all right at the same so I'm not really worried about it....

Drained the oil and it was overfilled like I had hoped it would be. Getting ready to go pick up the filter and fill her back up, then RTV a tiny spot on the valve cover thats leaking. Then gonna try and tune on the carbs a bit and make sure the oil spraying out of the breather tube is gone. I'm starting to feel better knowing the oil was overfilled, but I will feel better after I rev it up and it doesn't spew oil everywhere.
