So it's as it's stated on an 82 xj750... could it be a sensor leaking? Do they have gaskets? It's not a ton.. just causes smoke. Appreciate all your thoughts guys!

The are a few places hat it could be leaking from. First make sure that it's from the oil pan and not from somewhere higher up that is leaking down to the pan.

There is an oil level sensor that has a gasket and an o-ring. The seals can break down and leak over time, as can the seal between the switch body and the wiring (less likely). It is the most likely place to leak.

The neutral safety switch has a cush washer. These rarely leak, and it's highly unlikely that anyone has ever removed the switch, but it is possible.
The oil pan gasket itself can leak. This is also an unlikely source, but is possible.
The oil pan intself is well protected by the exhaust collector, but it is possible that road debris hit the pan and caused it to crack.

The oil level sending unit has an o ring, and the oil pan itself has a paper gasket.

Undo your edit. You're right about the oil level sensor just having an o-ring.

He should also check that the oil filter housing isn't the source of the leak.
