I had an oil leak, it appeared to be coming from the valve cover, so I cleaned up the area, and put a new gasket on. I ran it a few times and it appeared to have stopped, but today I went out to the garage and there was a fresh spot of oil under the front of the bike, just like before I changed the gasket.

My question is, is there a seal around the tach pickup? Is this a fairly common leak area? Near as I can figure, after I run it, oil is settling in the little pocket by the drive gear for the tach pickup and seeping out.

    Any suggestions?

which bike? should be an o-ring and a stop ring where the tach cable enters the engine.

There is an oil seal and an o-ring on the tach drive. Mine was leaking last year. Very easy repair. Just take care not to snap the tach drive housing in half. Been there, done that!.

So, from the looks of it, it just lifts out when you take the valve cover and gasket off?

Unscrew the tach cable from the drive housing where it enters the cylinder head. Be careful, that's how I broke mine. Pull the tach cable out and remove the bolt that holds the forked tab in place. The tach cable drive unit will now pull out of the cylinder head. There is an inner seal in the drive unit and the o-ring you can see in the picture. Replace the seal and o-ring and you should be good to go. I used finger pressure only to tighten up the tach cable. Use some good thick gloves and torque it up when the engine is hot. Welding gloves work well.

I tried to attach a parts diagram but the technology needed escapes me. Anyone else have that ability?
