I picked up this tool from an old Yamaha mechanic today. He said it hasn't been used in years and may need some tuning/new rubber. As it currently stands, the nut at the end spins with ease; so I will be getting a locknut the first chance I get (wouldn't want that thing coming loose in the engine). From the left end of the tool, as seen in the pictures, where should the center of the black rubber hoses be (measurement wise) in relation to the measuring tape? Are the hoses still thick enough? Lastly, the third black rubber hose (11 inch mark) appears to have a bulge on the left side (without tension applied). What do you all think I should do with this thing? In particular, I was hoping someone could tell me exactly where everything should line up. The examples I have seen on the web didn't give me exact measurements. As always, thanks.

Really, only the one closest to the handle needs to be an exact measurement as it needs to sit exactly on the port for carb 1 or 4 depending on which side you insert from. The others just block the passage between carbs so no need to be precise.

Looks to me like it got stored in the locked position and that one at the 11 inch mark obtained a permanent bulge.

If the rubber seems pliable, and you can get the bulged one into the passage I'd use it as is.

Otherwise, get new rubber and cut to the same lengths as the old ones.

Done. I had some great-quality heat-resistant vacuum hose, which worked perfectly. The crazy part is that I didn't even need the thing. I guess it's not needed on 1985 xj700xn's. I have it for sale on the appropriate forum. Thanks for the response! Jay

I have a XJ700N and use one on mind.

Makes me wonder, are the passages inside the chamber open or plugged?

    That makes a good difference.
