I have an 83 XJ750, I've replaced the ignition switch, side stand relay, starter solenoid and the battery and i finally have it cranking with the starting switch. but like most it is only cranking, not starting. I'm not sure if the spark plug needs to be in the cable/coil but the cable itself doesn't have a spark when i turn off the light. i hook the spark plug in the cable and it still doesn't spark. sorry for starting another forum on this seemingly same topics as everyone else but I've looked at others and cant seem to find one that helps.

You need to ground it before you will see spark. I.E. use an insulated screw driver put it in the spark plug boot making sure its touching the metal n the boot and get the shaft of the screw driver very close to the motor. You should see a spark between the screwdriver and the engine block. You don't have to have the lights off. But if in direct sun its hard to see sometimes. Also if the spark plug is out of the motor. Put it in the boot and hold it to the side of the block. Then it will spark on the plug its self.
