I cleaned the carbs, swapped out valve shims, and synced the carbs. Holy cow she screams now!

The only damage I caused is that the left hand blinker isn't working. No lights and no blinking. The right side works fine. The blinker relay clicks once but does nothing. I pulled out the relay and swapped wires but I couldn't get it to do anything. I was trying to make the left side work but the relay mustn't care which side is selected.

Any ideas? Stick with hand signals? :)

My experience has been limited, and not quite the same problem, but I'd start with checking continuity on the wiring in the LH signal stalks. First, obviously, ohm out the bulbs themselves. If they pass, look at the sockets to ensure they're not corroded. If that's okay, plug the bulb back in, unhook the two wires from the harness, and ohm those out. Do this front and rear.

My problem was that the RH side would light up, but not blink -- turned out to be a ever-so-slightly loose connection from the rear bulb to the harness. Pinched the female connector a little tighter, plugged the wire back in, and it works fine now.

If none of this works for you, then someone with more of a clue than I will want to chime in.

Test the Wiring for +12V down-stream from the Switch.

    Test the Bulb
Test the Spring-loaded Platform in the Socket (POWER OFF).
Shrink-wrap the Probe of a Test Light leaving just an exposed TIP to prevent a Grounding Short.
Probe the Socket for +12V -&- Ground
Meter wiring for Continuity and Grounds

Dress the Contacts on the Bulbs with a FINE Emery Board.

    Observe opposite Light.
RT Fnt ... ON ... No Blink = RT Rr Bulb Burnt Out
    (Vice-versa)

    Thank you Rick.

I traced it back to the switch. It was pretty obvious since the blinker was great one direction and silent for the other. Thankfully the switch is serviceable and easy to disassemble. I cleaned and took everything apart. A solder connection had come undone at the three wire slide. I re-soldered it, added some new grease, and now it's back to normal.

It's easy to see how electric gremlins can hide in these bikes, 30 years of oxidation can do some damage.

There should be "Merit Badges" for some of the jobs we do to restore functionality to Parts on these Bikes.

Handlebar Controls would be right up there with the most popular of badges to be earned.

I had the exact same problem when I bought my XJ, except it was the LEFT side that worked and the right side that didn't. After a bit of investigation, I traced mine back to the handlebar controls too, and like you found mine was a bad solder point. A quick job with the solder gun and good as new!
